I DIDN’T GET INVITED! – message from Sam
"I didn’t get invited! How come I never know about the gatherings until after they are over?"
Have you ever heard this form anyone you have been around? Sure you have!
You may have even said it yourself at one time. The answer may be very simple:

DID YOU LET ANYONE KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE INVOLVED?

You know, I’m not much of a mind reader and I don’t know too many people who are.
I have been asked, "You are always going somewhere. How do you do it?"
Well, here’s this Sanpeter’s answer to that question. I started out in the community,
senior citizens, country theatre groups doing readings, my own family reunion
and from there invited to other family reunions. I hardly ever said no and expected
nothing for my troubles. Although I usually always got fed and a lot of kind words that
meant a lot! Every time I went somewhere, someone there would ask me to go somewhere else.
From that program I got two or three more invitations. I went to my first gathering/competition
in Cedar City about four to five years ago and met Fay Briscoe who
invited me to Emmett, Idaho. I also met Sam Jackson at that same festival who invited
me to help put on a program in Parowan at a Draft Horse Shaw. At that show Dr. King,
who was just traveling through and stopped to see the dreaft horses, heard my stories and asked
if I have ever been to Durango! (This will be my third year going there.)

Right here in Utah, Barbara Hall got Prescott, Arizona to send me an application
to their show and I’ll be going there for the third year this summer.
I did a little show in Payson, Utah, and was invited to the Heber City program,
the Ogden Pioneers Day program and several smaller community programs.

I DID GET INVITED!

Why? I took the first step, a baby one at that,
and started the adventure for myself.
The first baby step took me to bigger steps and the opportunity to experience many adventures!

WANNA GET INVITED?

Don’t sit back and wait for it to happen.
Volunteer to do poetry at your church parties, community celebrations, civic organizations.
Don’t be afraid to send your bio, letter of request to participate along with an audio
tape of your presentations to any and all of the gatherings in the Western United States.
And one very important part of knowing when and where gatherings are?

BECOME A MEMBER OF POETRY ASSOCIATIONS

which will enable you to receive their newsletters with
dates and contact persons for gatherings. Then, when they
invite you, GO! Or at least let them know you received their kind invitation, tell
them you are not able to come this year, but please include your name on the list for next year!

DIDN’T GET INVITED???? IT MAY VERY WELL BE YOUR PROBLEM!

Hope to see all of you at the gatherings this season. Call, write, or just show up!

CPU MEETING AND JAM SCHEDULED!!!

At our last meeting, in March during the Western Arts Festival in Cedar City,
we discussed a few items of concern and decided we needed a follow up meeting!
That meeting has now been scheduled. MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!!

The Cowboy Corral
"Just north of Main Street on Center"
Elsinore, Utah
6:00 - ???? on May 17th

(For everyone who came to the Sevier show last year, the cowboy
corral was where we held our jam session. It’s a fun place,
very authentically cowboy, and the proprietors, Jim and Arlene Frost,
are everything anyone could ever ask for in hosts. )

That’s a Saturday, and we sure hope lots of folks can
make it down - or up.
Jim and Arlene are planning a little $5.00 hamburger buffet
for us, and it is optional whether or not you want to eat but they
do put out the feedbag nicely!

We’ll plan to hold our business meeting at 6:00,
then jam for as long as anyone wants to stay. Brooksie and the Back County
Horsemen have invited us to their jam session that night, too –
which will be held not far away, in Clear Creek Canyon around a big ol’ bonfire.
Brooksie says she’ll come by the meeting and haul off anyone who’d like to go with her,
after she’s fed her stay-at-home horses. At present, these are the business items
we’ve scheduled:

Final re-view for by-laws (if you have suggestions or changes, come prepared to share.)
Nomination/election of new vice-president (Marion Manwill’s replacement, since he has left usÖ come with names in mind.)
Clarification of Officer’s duties
Other Roles, Goals, Committees
Larry McWhorter Fund (Brooksie)
Youth Contest at Sevier Gathering (and other information)
Updates on fundraisers, etc.
Schedule next CPU meeting
If you’d like to schedule additional agenda items,
please contact Jo either by phone (435)896-1856 or email (jolynne.kirkwood@sevier.k12.ut.us

You are welcome to write to me, if you’d prefer (PO Box 5600017 – Sigurd, Utah 84657)
but easier to talk about stuff over the phone on with e-mail!

Please attend the CPU meeting, if you possibly can!
Our next meeting location, date and time will be scheduled at the May 17th meeting.
